June 22, 2012
Under the direction of the Osage Language Program Director, Herman “Mogri” Lookout, the program brought together the Kaw, Quapaw, Osage, Omaha and Ponca tribes for the first time at the 1st Dhegiha Gathering 2011. Once again, we will have the 2nd Dhegiha Gathering 2012 at the Downstream Resort and Casino in Quapaw, Oklahoma on July 31, August 1 & 2, 2012.
This past year video conferencing was used to conduct meetings with the Dhegiha tribes which has resulted in an outstanding agenda complete with speakers and presenters for the entire three days. This year the Dhegiha Gathering 2012 will have a live video stream of the conference at http://justin.tv/osagelanguage1. The main focus is to bring together language directors, coordinators, teachers, students, tribal officials and language advocates again, to share and have immersion with Dhegiha language. The theme “Sharing our Language for our Future” will help move forward the language and provide a solid foundation for future generations. There will be a new Dhegiha website in the near future which will have information from Dhegiha tribal viewpoints and native perspective from each tribe represented. The new website will
have language, history, culture, photos, curriculum, mission, goals, and other information that will be used as a foundation.
The Osage Language Program is very fortunate to have technological capabilities to preserve Dhegiha language. It is a challenge to learn the technology but very rewarding to our Dhegiha tribes. Last year’s conference focused on where we would like to take the conference and language from there which resulted in more depth of our language similarities, teaching techniques, technology, immersion and language interaction. The relationships established are phenomenal and the Osage Language Program is very excited to bring together again our language and see what evolves this year.
