It was with great sadness that I learned of Wilma Mankiller’s passing earlier today. The Cherokee Nation has lost a great leader; and so has the world. As she is crossing over to the place of family members that have gone before her, she will be entering the halls of history as one of the great leaders we have known in the modern era.
Wilma Mankiller inspired generations of people to reach deeply within themselves and give back to their people; she was that kind of a leader. I know because I am one of those individuals. Without Wilma Mankiller’s example I never would have had the audacity to enter public life to serve my people.
There can be no greater gift than to dedicate your life to your people, and her example will continue to inspire future leaders for generations to come.
