Osage Nation Million Dollar Elm Tree Dedication
August 15, 2006

As we look to a bright future for the Osage people, it’s important that we remember and learn from our successes and our trials.  One of the many blessings our people have enjoyed is our rich mineral reserve that has sustained many of our people and brought international recognition to the Reservation.  In keeping with our cultural preservation, the historical significance of the Million Dollar Elm as been recognized as the cornerstone of our past and future security.  It is our namesake. It is a prominent symbol of our independence.  However, nature and time have taken a toll on what remains of the original Million Dollar Elm.  Attempts to preserve the old stump have been researched and a conclusion has been reached that its condition is too severe to be restored.  This presents an opportunity.  In celebration of a new form of government and a new council, we will plant a new tree in place of the old.  It will grow upon the roots of the historic old tree and provide inspiration to a new generation of Osages.  Like the dawning of a new day, the new elm tree will bring the promise of a bright and prosperous future. We would like too honor the New Government and respect the significance of the Million Dollar Elm by holding a dedication to the replanting of the new tree.   The dedication will be held at 9:00a.m. on Friday, September 15, at the site of the new elm, north of the Federal Programs Buildilng.
